Expanding our Horizons

Whether you are a world class athlete or just an athlete that wants to look good and be fit, expanding our horizons has a powerful affect. The very spirit of CrossFit training philosophy is to be generally physically prepared (GPP).

This does not necessarily mean that we can be the best at all, but more importantly that we excel at what we are best in, and also expand our capacities into athletic arenas where we know we might struggle. It is this struggle, the experiencing of the new, and the test of the unknown that does something to your sense of self and capacity that no other venue can do! It is easy and comfortable to do the same thing, be tested by the same regime, and not consider the new, but it is "best" to test your own sense of capacity and who knows you might find a new passion.

Why I waited so long to try a triathlon, or many of the other things that I have recently experienced, I don't know? But one thing I do now, there is no better time than the present. And the present is now! So, go out and have yourself some fun and test your capacities and boundaries. You just might find that you like it...

If you compete in an event, we want to know about it. Also, if you have an interest in training in our ATO2 CrossFit Endurance Program, drop us a line.

Heavy Snatches!

Remember after Wod's that have high repetition counts or high intensity with movements that can become eccentric (negative or lengthening contractions), to hydrate well with water or electrolyte post workout drinks.

Eccentric training at higher repetitions can, if not careful, illicit significant muscle trauma and put athletes at risk for Rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition in which muscle tissue damage occurs causing the release of muscle cell contents or cell wall damage into the bloodstream. The kidneys then have to try to filter this material out of the blood and can suffer damage. Look for darker color urine "coke", and pain that is generally severe and unrelenting in the muscle areas trained. There may also be swelling and significant lack of mobility. If this symptoms become evident, contact your doctor.

When training, remember to appropriately "dose" yourself and be aware of your own limits. The use of assistive motion or eccentric movements beyond what you could normally perform along with high intensity exercise, should be limited. Always train with the "brain" and then with appropriate "pain"!

Aaron eating Paleo while flying in the air! He has continued to lose weight, eat right and train. Way to go Aaron.

"Train like you mean it..."

While on our vacation I had several people ask what type of training I was doing. I gave them the usual answer, high intensity, constantly varied functional movement. But then I thought about it, and that is doing what we do a disservice.

What we are really doing is training with a purpose in mind using these techniques! That is what separates CrossFit from most other exercise forms. When I went into the, "spa," on the boat, I wanted to ask each person, what are you doing, why are you doing it and what is the specific outcome you want to receive? Don't worry, I didn't.

When was the last time you asked yourself these questions and answered them? Take the time this week to review your goals, re-assess and determine what needs to change or remain the same.

"The key to insanity is to do the same thing and expect different results..."
